    I cannot join you in your celebration. I feel no elation. There is no smile on my face. I am not jumping with joy. There are no tears of triumph in my eyes. For such emotions and behavior to come from me ... I would have to abnegate my certain understanding that you have chosen to sprint down the road to serfdom that we have been on for over a century. I would have to pretend that individual liberty has no value for the success of a human life. ...

    So you have made history, Americans. You and your children have elected a black man to the office of the president of the United States, the wounded giant of the world. The battle between John Wayne and Jane Fonda is over – and that Fonda won. Eugene McCarthy and George McGovern must be very happy men. Jimmie Carter, too. And the Kennedys have at last gotten their Kennedy look-a-like. The self-righteous welfare statists in the suburbs can feel warm moments of satisfaction for having elected a black person. So, toast yourselves: 60s countercultural radicals, 80s yuppies and 90s bourgeois bohemians. Toast yourselves, Black America. Shout your glee Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Duke, Stanford, and Berkeley. You have elected not an individual who is qualified to be president, but a black man who, like the pragmatist Franklin Roosevelt, promises to – Do Something! You now have someone who has picked up the baton of Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. But you have also foolishly traded your freedom and mine – what little there is left – for the chance to feel good. There is nothing in me that can share your happy obliviousness.»

    Коммунизм в Детройте
     «Кен Пул неплохо зарабатывает. По рабочим дня он приходит в 7 утра на Мичиганский завод грузовиков компании Форда в Вайне, записывается и начинает работу - разгадывает кроссворды. Пулу не нравится монотонность работы, но зарплата хороша: больше $31 в час, плюс бенефиты (медстраховка и т.п.).

    «Мы просто приходим и занимаемся кроссвордами, смотрим видео, если кто принесет, или читаем газеты,» говорит Пул. «Или мне приходится просто сидеть.»

    Пул - один из более чем 12,000 американских автомобильных рабочих, которые, вместо того, чтобы устанавливать ветровые стекла или изгибать металлические листы, проводят свои дни в банках труда (job banks), организованных детройтскими автомобильными компаниями и корпорацией Дельфи в качестве части экстраординарного соглашения о надежности рабочих мест (job security) с профсоюзом Объединенных Автомобильных Рабочих (United Auto Workers, UAW).

    - Jobs bank programs -- 12,000 paid not to work - статья в Детройт Ньюс написана в 2005-м году. С тех пор автомобильные компании заключили новый контракт в профсоюзами, и программа сокращена и в нее добавлены более жесткие условия (членам профсоюза стало труднее отказываться от перевода на другой завод в том же районе, или от переезда в другой штат, например). Но она по прежнему действует. По некоторым оценкам, привилегии членам профсоюза Объединенных Автомобильных Рабочих удваивают цену американских автомобилей. Сейчас автомобильные компании хотят получить 25 миллиардов баксов от федерального правительства, чтобы помочь справиться со своими финансовыми трудностями.

    Update. Господа, я не настаиваю на том, что цена удваивается. Неужели это - самое интересное тут? Этого утверждения нет в цитированной статье. Два поста подряд комментаторы начинают цепляться к не очень надежному числу, при этом полносью пропуская весь смысл.

    Заинтересовались социализмом
     Если в Гугле набрать "define:", то в выскакивающем drop-down меню, предлагающем наиболее популярные термины, на первом месте оказывается "socialism". Заинтересовались. Лучше поздно, чем никогда.

    Update. А в России на первом месте вопрос "что такое любовь". Что-то неладно в обществе, в котором на первое место вышел вопрос "что такое социализм".

    Here is an old (1984 or 1985) interview, suddenly quite relevant:

    It is long, about 16 minutes (in English with French subtitles). The full 2 hours interview, apparently, is not available. It is reported that fragments of this interview are regularly removed from youtube and google-video, but some (or all) of them are currently available on youtube.

    Из старых дискуссий - существуют ли электроны?
     Поскольку к удаленной дискуссии полуторалетней давности о существовании электронов до сих пор сохраняется интерес, я решил воспроизвести ее основные куски.     «George often expressed interest in the fact that I had a government research grant. I did this in order to be able to assist students and to hire extraordinary persons interested in collaboration. George often explained why he believed scientists should avoid taking government research money. His theory was simple: the funder over time will ultimately direct the worker and perhaps play a role out of proportion. When the government funding of research evolved in the 1950s, it seemed at first to work reasonably well. It certainly fueled the expansion of university science in this country during the 1960s and the early 1970s. At that time I believed that the government agencies did a reasonable job in shepherding and nurturing science. The scheme attempted to identify talented and productive researchers and to assist those persons in whatever directions their research drew them. This support represented a subsidy for the universities.

    But over time one saw an evolution in the 1970s, much in the way that George had warned. Today the universities have became completely dependent on government support. On the other hand, the government agencies take the initiative to direct and to micro-manage the direction of science, funneling money to programs that appear fashionable or “in the national interest”. George warned that such an evolution could undermine the academic independence of the universities, as well as their academic excellence and intellectual standards. It could have a devastating effect on American science as a whole. While we have moved far in the direction of emphasizing programs over discovering and empowering talent, one wonders whether one can alter the apparent asymptotic state.»
